You Can Play Better Golf in 2021

Happy 2021, I hope this article catches you in good spirits! I wanted to talk about a few things that can help you inch closer to accomplish your golfing goals in 2021. If you're unsure of what you want yet.. don't worry keep reading, keep trying, and with time/effort you'll figure out where you want to be.

Let's start off with a few of the BASICs.. These are the things every great player demonstrates and we should all work towards having great fundamentals.

  • BEING ABLE TO TURN AND MOVE LIKE A GOLFER - this means roughly ninety degrees of shoulder rotation in the backswing, while the head stays relatively still. Then a weight shift onto the lead leg, while the hips/body rotate towards the target, and eventually finish with the belt buckle facing the target, and slight back bend in the upper torso. Some of you may be restricted in this range of motion, that's OK, what we need to understand here is we're working towards long-term fundamentals. And if range of motion is truly limited, we'll work around that

  • CREATING A PREDICTABLE BALL FLIGHT - the means being able to hit the golf ball near the middle of the club face, creating ball first contact, and having a club/face path relationship that is point near the target. Sounds simple on paper, yes? Well this is a big step in a golfers evolution and a very important one. I think it is one of the steps most commonly skipped over when a golfer is trying to hit it "straight" before they've created a decent contact scenario. It is doable though, just don't skip the steps!

  • SKILL BUILDING and COURSE MANAGEMENT - you can spend forever in these stages, and trust me no one ever just "beats the game". There is always something you can work on and be better at. But to me, getting to this stage of development is the most fun. Things like learning to work the golf ball, hit specialty shots, and manage the course in a way that makes the most sense now start to become priorities.

Golf is a great sport that can be played for a lifetime. That's part of what is so uncommon and makes the game special. After giving 10's of thousands of golf lessons, my advice is to enjoy the journey. Work on things one step at a time, and have a plan to work on your weaknesses. If you're in need of some help along that journey feel free to reach out via phone call 509-979-4653, e-mail, or book your first lesson above. Until next time, narrow your focus, and enjoy the journey.
