When Should You Get a Golf Club Fitting?

Customs clubs.. Do they actually help? In my experience yes, custom golf clubs can offer you a distinct advantage in distance and dispersion. I commonly see players pickup 15-20 yards with their driver, and watch their dispersion circles get smaller with their irons.

This article is really for the person considering a custom club fitting. I'd like to offer some thoughts on "when is the right time?"

When You Should Consider a Fitting?!

  1. If your clubs are 5 years old, or older, particularly with woods.. Woods have evolved a lot over the past decade or two.

  2. WHEN your swing is in a place that it's functional. You CANNOT fit a terrible golf swing, you'll end up compensating for one thing or another. A functional swing is one in which a player moves well, hits the ball first, and has some control of their direction. Getting the ball airborne should happen 85% of the time or more.

  3. If you want new clubs.. If you want new clubs go buy them.. Because if you delay you'll eventually make a poor decision, likely an impulse purchase.

  4. If you've never ever had a custom golf club fitting. It's likely you'll improve your distance and direction with a properly fit set of golf clubs.

If you haven't considered a custom golf club fitting, I'd really encourage you to. The actual cost of custom golf clubs is similar (sometimes the same) as buying clubs directly off the shelf from your local big box retailer. As a side benefit not only will you have custom golf clubs you'll likely be supporting a small business or golf club fitter.
