Oh, the Takeaway, Does it Matter?

First of all what's up?? And happy 2020! This is the year, the year for you to crush your golfing goals. I'm confident that with a little bit of direction, effort, and hustle you will be well on your way to shooting some of your best scores. I personally wanted to start from the ground up, and just put some really good solid information out into the golfing world. So that in itself, is what I'm trying to do. I want to start with the fundamentals, and build out from there. The order of operations goes something like this..

BUILD QUALITY MOVEMENT -> CREATE RESPECTABLE BALL FIRST CONTACT -> BEGIN TO ORGANIZE SWING PATH/CLUB FACE -> BUILD A PREDICTABLE BALL FLIGHT WITH A ONE-WAY MISS -> ANALYZE GAME FOR STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES/OPPORTUNITIES -> CONTINUE TO BUILD SKILLSET

Basically rinse, recycle, repeat that process until you're in a spot that you're happy with. It sounds simple on paper, but plans never turn out that simple. Today specifically I wanted to talk takeaway and why it does matter.

Here's the long and short of it. Your takeaway alone won't make you shoot great scores. Chances are, no matter how your takeaway looks, you're still capable of hitting the deep ball. But here's what a proper takeaway will do for your golf game. It sets you up for success!! Yeah that's right, it helps build out your foundation. It's the beginning of creating great tempo. The arms/body/club face working together in unison is a thing of beauty for a golf coach to watch. Also if you wanted to get technical and do a little homework, take a minute to go watch the top 20 female and male tour players. Watch their takeaway(s). You will find some striking similarities.

Well what goes into a good takeaway you ask? Let me summarize that with a list below

1. Shoulders turned 50-60 degrees

2. Shoulders tilted 25-25 degrees

3. Hips turned about 25 degrees

4. Leading edge of club face angled down towards the ground 15-30 degrees

I'm going to attach a video below, check it out for one of my very favorite takeaway drills!! Article continued below..

Of course these are only guidelines, but provide a strong starting point! At the end of the day there will always be variation due to body size, flexibility levels, and all other sorts of variable(s). The list is long, if you can working with a great coach can help you answer these questions quickly. Thanks for reading, and leave any questions you may have in the comments. Make 2020 your best golfing year yet.
